Turner, War: The Exile and the Rock Limpet, exhibited 1842

Magritte, Nocturne, 1925

I like Turner, and wanted to see his paintings the most, but left thinking about him much less than the others (he literally disappears towards the end, the last two rooms being filled with large or huge Monets and Twomblys (did Turner do any really big paintings?)). I kept walking towards Turner and away from Monet (then back towards them, then away again). At first I thought it was just a matter of colour or tone, but now I think it’s brushwork. Monet only comes into focus from a distance, while I always want to see those strange rocky smears on Turner close up. But when he gets specific, very figurative… The shapely Napoleon in this painting made me think of Magritte’s bilboquets.
